The original Studio Mehta Architecture (sm.a) studio, located just off General Mathenge in Nairobi, was conceived as a compact yet ambitious workspace that quietly challenged the conventions of architectural studios in Kenya. Within a modest footprint, the space demonstrated how thoughtful design, material ingenuity, and spatial clarity could transform a small office into a dynamic creative environment. Rather than relying on scale or spectacle, the studio relied on precision—carefully curated light, adaptable workspaces, and a material palette rooted in the local context.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
A defining feature of the studio was its now iconic terrazzo floor. Developed using waste limestone offcuts salvaged from another sm.a project, the floor incorporated polished limestone aggregate set within a terrazzo matrix. What began as a pragmatic exercise in material reuse became an integral part of the studio’s design identity. The rich, tactile surface—flecked with fragments of locally quarried stone—reflected the studio’s ethos of localized sustainability, demonstrating how construction by-products could be transformed into something both refined and enduring.
The space quickly evolved into more than just a workplace; it became a living laboratory for the studio’s ideas. Clients, collaborators, and artisans entering the studio encountered an environment that embodied the principles sm.a advocates in its projects: material honesty, resourcefulness, and a careful dialogue between craft and contemporary design. In this way, the General Mathenge studio did not simply house the practice—it quietly showcased the potential for a distinctly Kenyan approach to workspace design, one rooted in local materials, adaptive thinking, and architectural clarity.
